A report from the Center for China and Globalization, quoting the People's Daily of 15 August, says that a total of 432,500 students returned to China after graduating from overseas universities in 2016, up 36.26% compared to 2012. The report adds that by the end 2016, China has had a total of 2.65 million returnees.
Since China launched the “Thousand Talent” program for top global talent in 2008, more than 7,000 experts have been introduced and 53,900 high-level overseas Chinese have returned. An overwhelming proportion are in the field of science and technology.
At the same time, the number of domestic university graduates in 2017 is estimated to reach a total of 7.95 million, an increase of 300,000 over the previous year.
All these suggest that the Chinese economy, albeit slowing down in the speed of growth, still presents extremely attractive opportunities for this cohort of high-caliber talent. They would no doubt continue to play a key role as China upgrades to higher quality growth including innovation, advances in science and technology, in pursuit of the China Dream of global renaissance.
