The original Chinese TV series 山海情 consisting of 23 epistles delves into China's poverty relief struggle in the 1990s, full of heart-wrenching ups and downs. It has recently been dubbed in English and Arabic for global distribution, winning wide acclaim. The English version can be watched here.
Unlike "Wolf Warrior" films, the series should appeal to a massive audience in the poverty-stricken "global South". The effort appears to be a tale-telling breakthrough in projecting China's 'soft power" globally.
The backdrop is China's continuing poverty relief struggle. Since 1980, China has managed to lift some 800 million people out of extreme poverty (defined as per capita income of US$2.3 a day).
