"Uniting the West, America alienates the rest" - The Economist

In How to survive a superpower split ", The Economist (11 April 2023) outlines a changed contour of the world order, with 127 countries refusing to follow America's hymnbook on the Ukraine War (against 52 countries who do).

These 127 countries include 25 fairly large or wealthy economies (which The Economist terms T25 (T for "transactional"), such as India, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, and Egypt. They represent 45% of the world’s population and 18% of global GDP., more than the European Union's.

Some 43% of the T25 merchandise trade is with the Western bloc, 19% with the China-Russia bloc and 30% with countries in neither of those camps. However, this hides the fact that China has become the largest single trading partner to almost all of these countries.

These 127 "non-aligned" countries are in the so-called "Global South". They see through the West's hypocrisy, exemplified by the $170bn in aid pledged to Ukraine in the first year of the war, equivalent to 90% of spending on all global aid in 2021 by OECD donors.

All goes to show that rhetoric aside, the world order is no longer US-led, let alone dictated by the so-called G7 advanced economies, which, US aside, consists of "middling powers". The reality is that the world order has become much more multipolar, and significantly shifting towards a closer geo-economic relationship with China. .

World Bank Report 2023 - Falling Long-Term Growth Prospects: Trends, Expectations and Policies

The latest World Bank report paints a rather gloomy picture of the global economy for the rest of this decade.

I find the prognosis a little over-pessimistic. While the report covers the contribution of the digital economy, it doesn't seem to do enough justice to key productivity-growth drivers of the "Fourth and Fifth Industrial Revolutions" driven by 5G and 6G, Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things, 

 

Strong headwinds identified in the report including the Ukraine war, supply chain disruptions, Climate Change, and weakening demographics will damper growth. However, they may not necessarily derail growth of domestic economies driven by a new era of digitised services without borders. 

Obstacles to international trade will witness strong growth engines such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the world's largest free trade bloc accounting for a third of the global economy and a third of world population including the world's fastest-growing consumer middle class.

 

Lack of domestic infrastructure would lend itself to relief by initiatives such as China's Belt and Road Initiative, supported by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the New Development Bank, and the Global Development Initiative. 

 

Additionally, following a China-brokered historic rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, a more peaceful, interconnected Middle East focusing on trade, investments, growth and development is around the corner. 

 

All in all, I am inclined to the view that while the world may face a challenging and slower decade, there are green pastures rapidly emerging in the horizon, including a more dynamic and globally-connected China.

From Europe to the Middle East, the world's geopolitical tectonic plates are shifting fast.  Uncertain outcomes are confronting the Great Powers. America and its European allies remain united against a revanchist Russia. However, they appear anxious, if not paranoiac, about a rapidly rising, and sure-footed China, suddenly emerging from three years of pandemic lockdown to demonstrate its growing global gravitas. Meanwhile, a prolonged continental-scale proxy war over Ukraine has resulted in persistent inflation, repeated interest-rate hikes, social unrest, and an apparently contagious banking crisis.

Much of the West's mishaps and misguided actions reflects an unspoken denial.  Unable to call all the shots, the West's absolute dominance over the world order no longer endures. While the art of peaceful, inclusive co-existence (or "harmony despite differences" according to ancient Chinese philosophy), has yet to be learnt, the world is becoming a more dangerous place. The supply of "depleted uranium shells" to Ukraine may risk bating a heavily-nuclear-armed Russia in a downward spiral towards nuclear Armageddon.  

The following may offer fresh perspectives on some of the world's most critical flashpoints.

Greetings! May I first wish you and your loved ones a Happy Holiday Season and a rewarding 2023!

As we experience some festive relaxation, dark clouds continue to gather on the horizon. How would the Ukraine war pan out, with Russia losing or regaining the upper hand? Is a new multipolar World Order beginning to take shape, or will American hegemony continue to endure? Would US-China relations stabilize into a new normal, flashpoints like Taiwan notwithstanding? How would China's population, a fifth of humanity, cope with a sudden transition from a "dynamic zero-Covid" strategy to "living with the virus", as the pandemic appears to morph into a less deadly endemic like many other countries? 

Testing uncertainties remain. The following may hopefully offer some useful perspectives, including sunshine in the horizon.

Forum MEDays 2022, Tangier, Morocco, 2-5 November; "From Crises to Crises; Towards a New World Order?"

The MEDays Forum is organized by the Amadeus Institute, a Moroccan think tank based in Rabat and chaired by Brahim Fassi Fihri under the patronage of King Mohamed VI. It is considered by some observers to be the African Davos, as it is attended by some African heads of state and senior policy advisors including those from Western countries. The 14th Edition was held in Tangiers from 2 to 5 November 2022.

The world we have known for decades has now been turned upside down. A sense of uncertainty, anxiety and foreboding permeates everywhere. The Ukraine War is dragging on to a shivering European winter. Hell-bent on racking a revanchist Russia, it is threatening to engulf the rest of the world with nuclear Armageddon. Historic inflation and Fed rate hikes are ravaging economies across the globe. Extreme drought and weather conditions bear witness to worsening global Climate Change. Far-right neo-Nazi and neo-Fascist political parties are having a field day in hitherto liberal European democracies. All these are set on the grand stage of a no-holds-barred smokeless war of titans mounted by the United States, the extant world hegemon, against China as its perceived challenger, at the expense of collateral disruptions in four corners of the globe.
