Greetings! May I first wish you a marvellous 2018!  

The year ahead is at a foggy crossroads. Would an iconoclastic, transactional, "America First" President Trump fortuitously cede global power and influence to Presidents Xi and Putin? Would intensifying geopolitical rivalry lead to regional, if not global, war, with or without a nuclear-tipped and defiant Chairman Kim and revisionist Prime Minister Abe?

What is behind President Xi's "New Era Socialism with Chinese Characteristics"? What has become of his supply-side structural reform? How would he resolve China's debt and deleveraging problems? How successful is China becoming an innovative global digital powerhouse?

What challenges and opportunities are emerging from China's global footprint through its Belt and Road Initiative and its ubiquitous presence in a new Africa transformed by urbanisation, digitisation and a rising civil society? 

All these signal probable paradigm shifts. It is increasingly difficult to have a firm grasp of the dynamics to stay ahead of the game. To help see through the smoke and mirrors, the following may hopefully offer a little perspective.

Greetings! Let me first wish you an enjoyable and rewarding summer. 

 

While uncertainties remain around the globe, a less murky picture begins to emerge. Trump holds fast to his unpredictable persona and his transactional "America First" unilateralism, calling into question the United States' post-war leadership in the global commons. With a fractured Europe remaining to be healed and a Middle East mired in factional rivalries, China's growing international influence is increasingly sought after, lack of capacity and reluctance to step into America's shoes notwithstanding. This begs the question how the world order will be modified and how relations with Beijing should be managed, including, perhaps, future prospects for Hong Kong's One Country, Two Systems.

UAE promotes strategy to counter cyber terrorism

I was invited to participate in the International Conference for the Criminalization of Cyber Terrorism (ICCCT) held at the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort in Abu Dhabi, 15-16 May as an all-expenses-paid guest. The Conference was under the patronage of HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. It is designed to promote global understanding and co-operation in fighting cyber terrorism.

May I first wish you and your family Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year! 

 

We all need blessings as 2017 promises to be a decisive year with highly uncertain outcomes, for better or for worse.  Would a Trump presidency usher in a new era of aggressive American dominance? Greetings! My very best wishes to you and your family for an enjoyable and restful summer. 

As we go about our daily life and business, the world is becoming increasingly confrontational. Order and trust seem to be breaking down. 

A rising Islamic State (ISIS) is occupying a large swathe of territory in Iraq and Syria. Important historical artifacts and heritage sites had been vandalized, pilfered or smashed. No superpower seems able or willing to go all the way to stop it in its tracks. 

In the Asia-Pacific, the United States, along with Japan, seems to be intensifying covert or overt tussles with a rising and more assertive China. These manifest themselves in military, trade, economic, and other forms of power rivalry in the South China Sea and beyond. 

In Hong Kong, at the time of writing, the impasse over the shape of universal suffrage for the election of the Chief Executive (top leader) in 2017 is looking increasingly ominous.  Lack of sufficient votes in the Legislature for the government’s proposals to pass seems a certainty. The endgame is up on 17 June when the proposals are widely expected to be voted down, barring last-minute black swans.

Summer sojourns in London and Tuscany

Greetings!  May I wish you peace and progress in a troubled world. 

With the Ukraine face-off between Russia and the West, the world is now a very different place. I am not just talking about Russia's "near-abroad". I am referring to the possible emergence of a new Cold War.

 

Will this drive Russia closer to China, the latter's expanding eastern Siberia settlement notwithstanding? Will the United States have to re-balance its Asian Pivot, given changed global dynamics, strained financial and military resources and a war-weary electorate? Will this unfold a new era of Chinese diplomacy? How will the Grand Chessboard be playing out?

As for China, with a slowing economy, shadow banking risks, worsening ecological strains, and uncertain foreign relations, what is the outlook for 2014 and beyond? Would China and the United States be able to seize the opportunity of stabilizing the world's monetary and economic systems? Will blue skies ever return to China's cities? How realistic is the "China Dream"?
